How Often Should You Really Get a Lash Refill (And What Happens If You Leave It Too Long)

You got your full set done. They looked incredible. You were obsessed. And then life got busy.

Sound familiar? Whether it has been three weeks or three months, one of the most common questions we get at Mobile Beauty Co. is: how often do I actually need to come back for a refill?

The honest answer is, it depends. But there are some clear signs your lashes are telling you it is time, and some very real consequences of waiting too long. Here is everything you need to know.

First, Why Do Lash Extensions Fall Out at All?

Your natural lashes are always shedding. It is completely normal you lose between two and five natural lashes per day as part of your lash growth cycle. Because your extensions are attached to your natural lashes, when those lashes shed, the extension goes with them.

This is why your lash extensions never fall out all at once. They thin gradually over time as your natural lashes cycle through their growth phases. How quickly this happens depends on a few factors:

  • Your natural lash growth cycle (some people shed faster than others)
  • How well you look after your extensions at home
  • Your lifestyle (swimmers, gym junkies and hot yoga fans will find their lashes thin faster)
  • Hormonal changes including pregnancy, postpartum and menopause
  • Skincare and makeup products that contain oil or glycol near the eye area
  • How often you sleep on your face

None of this means you are doing anything wrong. It just means understanding your own lash cycle helps you plan your refills better.

So How Often Should You Be Getting a Refill?

As a general guide, most clients book their lash refills every two to three weeks. But here is a more specific breakdown depending on your lash style:

Classic Lashes: Every 2 to 3 Weeks

Classic lashes are a one-to-one application, meaning one extension per natural lash. Because there are fewer lashes overall, any shedding is more noticeable. Most classic lash clients find they need a refill closer to the two week mark to keep their set looking full and intentional rather than patchy.

Hybrid Lashes: Every 2 to 3 Weeks

Hybrid lashes combine classic and volume techniques, giving a slightly fuller and textured look. The blend of lash types means they tend to hold up a little longer than a pure classic set but the same two to three week window generally applies.

Volume and Mega Volume Lashes: Every 3 to 4 Weeks

Volume lashes use lash fans applied to each natural lash, so there is more coverage per lash. Because of this, they tend to look full for slightly longer. Most volume lash clients can comfortably stretch to three weeks before their refill, though some prefer to come back at two and a half weeks to keep them at their best.

The sweet spot for most clients is every two to three weeks. It keeps your lashes looking intentional and full rather than sparse and grown out.

What Actually Happens If You Leave It Too Long?

This is the question most clients really want answered. Whilst the answer will be different for everyone in general here is the truth,

Around 4 Weeks: Noticeably Sparse

At the four week mark, most sets have lost enough lashes that the gaps are obvious. Your extensions may look patchy, and the remaining lashes can start to look a little lonely. You will still be able to get a refill at this point, but your lash tech will need to spend more time on it and the price may reflect this.

Around 5 to 6 Weeks: Full Set Territory

By five or six weeks, most clients have lost enough extensions that a refill is no longer possible. At this point you are looking at a fresh full set. The remaining extensions may also have grown out significantly on the natural lash, sitting further down the shaft rather than at the root, which is not ideal for the health of your natural lashes.

Beyond 6 Weeks: Natural Lash Health at Risk

Here is the part that surprises most people. Leaving extensions on for too long without maintenance can actually cause damage to your natural lashes. When an extension has grown out significantly and is sitting at the mid-point of your natural lash rather than the root, it creates weight distribution issues that can weaken or break the natural lash underneath. Regular refills are not just about aesthetics. They are about keeping your natural lashes healthy underneath.

Signs It Is Time for a Refill Right Now

Not sure where you are in your lash cycle? Here are the telltale signs your lashes are ready for their refill:

  • You can see visible gaps when you look in the mirror
  • Your lashes look uneven or asymmetrical
  • Your lashes are starting to feel uncomfortable or you are noticing they feel different
  • You are reaching for mascara again (a big one)
  • The extensions feel heavy or are sitting at an odd angle
  • You have had them for more than three weeks and they are thinning noticeably
  • You are self-conscious about them in photos or at work

If any of those sound familiar, it is time to book.

Tips to Make Your Lashes Last Longer Between Refills

The good news is there is a lot you can do at home to extend the life of your set and get more out of each appointment.

Brush them daily. A clean spoolie brush keeps your lashes aligned and prevents tangling and breakage. Do it every morning gently.

Cleanse them weekly. Yes, really. Lash extension cleanser removes build up of oils, makeup residue and dead skin cells that can break down the adhesive. Dirty lashes do not last as long.

Sleep on your back or use a silk pillowcase. Side and face sleeping puts pressure on your lashes and causes premature shedding. A silk pillowcase reduces friction if you cannot kick the habit.

Avoid oil-based products around the eye area. Oils break down lash adhesive faster than anything else. Check your makeup remover, cleanser, and eye cream for oils or glycols.

Be gentle with water. You do not need to avoid water entirely, but hot showers, saunas, and steam rooms will shorten your lash life. Let water run gently over your face rather than blasting them directly.

Does It Matter Who Does Your Refill?

Yes. A lot.

Not all lash techs apply extensions the same way, and going to someone different for your refill can sometimes create issues if the lash style, curl, or product is not compatible with your existing set. At Mobile Beauty Co., we recommend sticking with the same therapist where possible so they know your lash history, your natural lash condition, and how you like them done. In saying that all the therapists use the same lash products and glue and we keep detailed client notes so it is still better to go to the same salon rather than switching between salons who may use different products and glue which can lead to allergies developing (this is a whole other story!).

What About Lash Removal? When Does a Refill Become a Full Set?

As a general rule at Mobile Beauty Co.:

  • If you have 40 to 50 percent or more of your extensions remaining, we can do a refill
  • If you have less than 30 percent remaining, you will likely need a full set
  • If it has been more than 5 to 6 weeks, we will assess on the day but a full set is usually the better option for the health of your natural lashes

We will always let you know at your appointment what we recommend before we start so there are no surprises on pricing.

The Easiest Way to Stay on Top of Your Lash Schedule

Lash Lifts vs Lash Extensions, What’s Better for Melbourne’s On The Go Women?

Melbourne women are busy! Between work, weekend plans, school drop offs, brunch and squeezing in Pilates, everyone wants beauty treatments that look amazing and fit effortlessly into their lifestyle. Two of the most popular lash services at the moment are lash lifts and lash extensions — but which one is right for you?

Here’s a clear breakdown to help you choose the best option for your routine, preferences, and of course your natural lashes.

What’s the Difference?

Before comparing them, here’s a quick explanation of each,

Lash Lift

A lash lift is basically a “perm” for your natural lashes. It curls them upward from the base to make them look longer, darker and more open. Essentially it’s like curling your lashes with a curler but it holds. You can either get a tint to go with it or pop mascara on, or go with both.

Good for: low maintenance girlies, natural look lovers, swimmers and people with long natural lashes who want them to pop.

Lash Extensions

Lash extensions are individual lash fibres that are attached to each natural lash to create length, thickness, fullness or a specific style and look (classic, hybrid, volume, cat eye, doll eye, etc.).

Good for: clients who want glam, extra fullness or dramatic eyes with zero mascara and time spent getting ready in the morning.

Which One Suits Your Melbourne Lifestyle Best?

1. Time Commitment & Maintenance

Lash Lift: Low Maintenance

  • Appointments every 6–8 weeks
  • No infills required
  • You can swim, gym, sauna, and shower normally once the first 24 hours are done

Perfect for women who want to “set and forget.”

Lash Extensions: Moderate Maintenance

  • Infills every 2–4 weeks
  • Aftercare matters (no oil based skincare, careful around water and steam)
  • Requires brushing daily and weekly cleansing

A good fit if you love the glam effect and don’t mind a little upkeep every few weeks in place of the time spent getting ready in the mornings.

2. Melbourne’s Weather & Lifestyle Considerations

Melbourne’s weather can swing from humid to dry in the same day.

Lash Lift Benefits in Melbourne Weather

  • No retention issues from humidity or sweat
  • Ideal for active lifestyles (Pilates, hot yoga, F45, running)

Extensions in Melbourne Weather

  • Humidity fluctuations can affect retention as well as seasonal changes
  • Sweat and steam can shorten lash life if not cleaned properly

Extensions still work beautifully, but maintenance is key.

3. Desired Look

If you want natural beauty without ongoing commitment,

A lash lift wins. It enhances what you already have without adding anything artificial and doesn’t require commitment to upkeep as it will grow out naturally with your lash cycle.

If you want extra volume, hate putting mascara on in the mornings, want a more glam option,

Extensions are unbeatable. You can choose:

  • Classic (mascara look)
  • Hybrid (a little fluff)
  • Volume (full + glam)
  • Mega volume (bold)

4. Your Natural Lash Health

Lash Lifts work best if you naturally have,

  • Medium to long lashes
  • Strong and healthy lashes
  • Straight or downward pointing lashes

Lash Extensions work best if you have,

  • Sparse lashes
  • Gaps
  • Shorter lashes you want lengthened
  • A specific eye shape style (cat eye, doll eye, open eye)

Extensions allow for customisation lifts can’t achieve.

5. Event Season Considerations

Melbourne has constant events — racing season, weddings, hens parties, dinners, Christmas functions.

Best for Events?

Lash extensions, especially hybrid or volume.
They photograph beautifully and give a polished, finished look with no extra effort.

Best for everyday wear?

A lash lift looks clean, effortless, and suits a no makeup or minimal makeup routine.

6. Cost Over Time

Costs vary, but here’s a general idea:

Lash Lift:

  • One appointment every 6–8 weeks and you can stretch this out if needed
  • Usually more affordable in the long run

Lash Extensions:

  • Initial full set and regular refills
  • Higher ongoing commitment

If you’re budget conscious or not sure what you prefer yet, a lash lift is a great starting point.

Final Verdict: Which Is Better?

There’s no one “right” answer it totally comes down to your lifestyle and beauty preferences.

Choose Lash Lift if you:

✔ Prefer low maintenance
✔ Want to enhance natural lashes
✔ Are active or sweat a lot
✔ Like a clean, natural look
✔ Don’t want regular refills

Choose Lash Extensions if you:

✔ Want a noticeable glam or ‘always put together’ result
✔ Love customised lash styles
✔ Want to ditch mascara entirely
✔ Don’t mind maintenance
✔ Need full, dense lashes for events or photos

Both treatments can make your eyes look incredible, it’s just about what fits your routine and goals!

How to Get the Perfect Spray Tan (Even While Breastfeeding)

Becoming a mum changes everything, your routine, your priorities, your sleep… and sometimes, your selfcare. If you’ve been missing that post holiday glow or simply want to feel a little more you again, a spray tan can make a world of difference.

But if you’re breastfeeding, you might be wondering: is it safe? when’s the best time to tan? and how on earth do you fit it in between feeds?

At Mobile Beauty Co., we work with hundreds of Melbourne mums every year and we’ve become experts at helping you look (and feel) amazing while caring for your little one. Here’s everything you need to know about getting the best, safest and most convenient spray tan while breastfeeding.

Is a Spray Tan Safe While Breastfeeding?

Yes, when done properly, spray tans are generally considered safe while breastfeeding. Our tanning solutions are vegan, cruelty-free, and have a natural DHA base. The DHA works by reacting with only the top layer of skin to create a natural bronzed tone.

That said, your skin can be more sensitive postpartum. We always recommend doing a patch test first, and if you have any concerns, a quick chat with your GP or maternal health nurse never hurts.

For peace of mind, we also make sure your tanning area is well ventilated we usually advise setting up the tan tent in an area like a large living area, a garage or even outside if weather permits!

Another tip is to avoid spray tan directly on to the nipples if you are breast feeding. Even though its safe (once washed off) for your baby to feed we think it’s always better to be extra safe! A great tip is to get a maternity pad, cut it in half and place each half, round side up, over your nipples and the area surrounding. This works well because the tan line wont be high enough to be seen in different outfits however it still protect your little one.

Timing Your Tan Around Feeding

One of the perks of booking a mobile spray tan is that we come to you — meaning you don’t need to juggle car seats, nappy bags, or public change rooms.

Most of our breastfeeding clients like to book their tan:

  • Right after a feed, when youve got a window before needing to feed again (both for breast feeding and bottle feeding to avoid having to prepare and wash bottles and any chance of getting your spray tan wet).
  • When you’ve just put bub down for a nap (just take note the tan machine can be loud so as long as this wont interrupt nap time).
  • In the evening once bub has gone down, we are open until 8pm every weeknight.
  • Whenever you have a partner or support person around who can hold on to bub for 15-20 mins, this is all the time it takes from when your therapist arrives to when they leave!

Tips for the Best Tan (Without the Mess)

A few little tweaks make all the difference:

  • Exfoliate in the days leading up to your tan to remove dry skin and any old product.
  • Avoid heavy moisturisers or deodorant the day of your appointment.
  • Shave or wax the day before your appointment. If you need to shave after your tan it will remove some of the product but if you absolutely have to we recommend using a shaving cream as well as a brand new razor, the sharper the razor, the less tan it will remove.
  • Wear a loose, dark breastfeeding friendly top so you can stay comfy after your tan. Even better you can just hang out in your dressing gown/ robe as you’re already at home!
  • Once your tan is applied (before you have your shower) make sure that any area that will be touching your little ones skin is covered as there will be transfer.

If you’re worried about baby’s skin touching freshly tanned areas, pop on a light robe or long sleeve pjs until your first rinse. This wont affect your tan but will stop transfer.

Aftercare Tips for Breastfeeding Mums

After your tan develops, you can shower as normal (just remember no body wash or moisturiser for your initial shower) just remember to:

  • Moisturise daily to keep your tan glowing longer.
  • Avoid long, hot showers (they can fade your tan faster). Hot water dries your skin and dry skin means your tan could throw more of an “orange” tone as well as coming off faster.
  • Pat dry with your towel after a shower rather than rubbing.
  • When feeding, if your baby tends to rest on your chest or arms, keep a soft cloth or wrap between your skin and theirs for the first 24 hours.

With gentle care, your tan can last up to ten days.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How long does a mobile spray tan take?
A mobile spray tan usually takes around 20–30 minutes, including setup. Your therapist brings everything needed, tent, solution, and equipment so all you need is a small space at home (with access to a powerpoint).

2. Are at home lash extensions safe?
Yes! At home lash extensions are applied by qualified beauty therapists using professional products. Just as they would be in a salon. The process is the same as in salon, with strict hygiene and safety standards followed to protect your eyes and natural lashes.

3. How long will my spray tan and lashes last?
A spray tan typically lasts 7–10 days with the right prep and aftercare. Lash extensions last 3–4 weeks before a refill is recommended. Your therapist will give you personalised tips to extend the life of both and they will depend a little on your skin type and natural lash cycle.

4. Do I need to prepare before my appointment?
For a spray tan, exfoliate and avoid moisturisers or perfumes before your appointment. For lash extensions, arrive with clean, makeup-free eyes. Your therapist will guide you through everything else to make sure you get the best results.

5. Can I get a spray tan if I have lash extensions?
You sure can but it’s best to allow a day after your lash application to allow the adhesive to fully cure. If both need to be done on the same day this is totally fine as well however we would advise against tanning your face or doing a light spray and then wiping the tan solution off with a damp flannel instead of putting your face under water so your lashes dont get wet.

6. What should I wear immediately after my spray tan?
Opt for loose, dark clothing and flip-flops. Avoid water or sweating for at least 6–8 hours to ensure the tan sets correctly, ideally shower the next morning (after your initial rinse where you wont use any body wash or moisturiser post shower!).
