How Often Should You Really Get a Lash Refill (And What Happens If You Leave It Too Long)
You got your full set done. They looked incredible. You were obsessed. And then life got busy.
Sound familiar? Whether it has been three weeks or three months, one of the most common questions we get at Mobile Beauty Co. is: how often do I actually need to come back for a refill?
The honest answer is, it depends. But there are some clear signs your lashes are telling you it is time, and some very real consequences of waiting too long. Here is everything you need to know.
First, Why Do Lash Extensions Fall Out at All?
Your natural lashes are always shedding. It is completely normal you lose between two and five natural lashes per day as part of your lash growth cycle. Because your extensions are attached to your natural lashes, when those lashes shed, the extension goes with them.
This is why your lash extensions never fall out all at once. They thin gradually over time as your natural lashes cycle through their growth phases. How quickly this happens depends on a few factors:
- Your natural lash growth cycle (some people shed faster than others)
- How well you look after your extensions at home
- Your lifestyle (swimmers, gym junkies and hot yoga fans will find their lashes thin faster)
- Hormonal changes including pregnancy, postpartum and menopause
- Skincare and makeup products that contain oil or glycol near the eye area
- How often you sleep on your face
None of this means you are doing anything wrong. It just means understanding your own lash cycle helps you plan your refills better.
So How Often Should You Be Getting a Refill?
As a general guide, most clients book their lash refills every two to three weeks. But here is a more specific breakdown depending on your lash style:
Classic Lashes: Every 2 to 3 Weeks
Classic lashes are a one-to-one application, meaning one extension per natural lash. Because there are fewer lashes overall, any shedding is more noticeable. Most classic lash clients find they need a refill closer to the two week mark to keep their set looking full and intentional rather than patchy.
Hybrid Lashes: Every 2 to 3 Weeks
Hybrid lashes combine classic and volume techniques, giving a slightly fuller and textured look. The blend of lash types means they tend to hold up a little longer than a pure classic set but the same two to three week window generally applies.
Volume and Mega Volume Lashes: Every 3 to 4 Weeks
Volume lashes use lash fans applied to each natural lash, so there is more coverage per lash. Because of this, they tend to look full for slightly longer. Most volume lash clients can comfortably stretch to three weeks before their refill, though some prefer to come back at two and a half weeks to keep them at their best.
The sweet spot for most clients is every two to three weeks. It keeps your lashes looking intentional and full rather than sparse and grown out.
What Actually Happens If You Leave It Too Long?
This is the question most clients really want answered. Whilst the answer will be different for everyone in general here is the truth,
Around 4 Weeks: Noticeably Sparse
At the four week mark, most sets have lost enough lashes that the gaps are obvious. Your extensions may look patchy, and the remaining lashes can start to look a little lonely. You will still be able to get a refill at this point, but your lash tech will need to spend more time on it and the price may reflect this.
Around 5 to 6 Weeks: Full Set Territory
By five or six weeks, most clients have lost enough extensions that a refill is no longer possible. At this point you are looking at a fresh full set. The remaining extensions may also have grown out significantly on the natural lash, sitting further down the shaft rather than at the root, which is not ideal for the health of your natural lashes.
Beyond 6 Weeks: Natural Lash Health at Risk
Here is the part that surprises most people. Leaving extensions on for too long without maintenance can actually cause damage to your natural lashes. When an extension has grown out significantly and is sitting at the mid-point of your natural lash rather than the root, it creates weight distribution issues that can weaken or break the natural lash underneath. Regular refills are not just about aesthetics. They are about keeping your natural lashes healthy underneath.
Signs It Is Time for a Refill Right Now
Not sure where you are in your lash cycle? Here are the telltale signs your lashes are ready for their refill:
- You can see visible gaps when you look in the mirror
- Your lashes look uneven or asymmetrical
- Your lashes are starting to feel uncomfortable or you are noticing they feel different
- You are reaching for mascara again (a big one)
- The extensions feel heavy or are sitting at an odd angle
- You have had them for more than three weeks and they are thinning noticeably
- You are self-conscious about them in photos or at work
If any of those sound familiar, it is time to book.
Tips to Make Your Lashes Last Longer Between Refills
The good news is there is a lot you can do at home to extend the life of your set and get more out of each appointment.
Brush them daily. A clean spoolie brush keeps your lashes aligned and prevents tangling and breakage. Do it every morning gently.
Cleanse them weekly. Yes, really. Lash extension cleanser removes build up of oils, makeup residue and dead skin cells that can break down the adhesive. Dirty lashes do not last as long.
Sleep on your back or use a silk pillowcase. Side and face sleeping puts pressure on your lashes and causes premature shedding. A silk pillowcase reduces friction if you cannot kick the habit.
Avoid oil-based products around the eye area. Oils break down lash adhesive faster than anything else. Check your makeup remover, cleanser, and eye cream for oils or glycols.
Be gentle with water. You do not need to avoid water entirely, but hot showers, saunas, and steam rooms will shorten your lash life. Let water run gently over your face rather than blasting them directly.
Does It Matter Who Does Your Refill?
Yes. A lot.
Not all lash techs apply extensions the same way, and going to someone different for your refill can sometimes create issues if the lash style, curl, or product is not compatible with your existing set. At Mobile Beauty Co., we recommend sticking with the same therapist where possible so they know your lash history, your natural lash condition, and how you like them done. In saying that all the therapists use the same lash products and glue and we keep detailed client notes so it is still better to go to the same salon rather than switching between salons who may use different products and glue which can lead to allergies developing (this is a whole other story!).
What About Lash Removal? When Does a Refill Become a Full Set?
As a general rule at Mobile Beauty Co.:
- If you have 40 to 50 percent or more of your extensions remaining, we can do a refill
- If you have less than 30 percent remaining, you will likely need a full set
- If it has been more than 5 to 6 weeks, we will assess on the day but a full set is usually the better option for the health of your natural lashes
We will always let you know at your appointment what we recommend before we start so there are no surprises on pricing.
