Why Your Spray Tan Looks Patchy in Winter (And What to Do About It)
Dry winter skin and spray tans don’t mix well, but they can. Melbourne’s mobile spray tan experts share exactly how to prep dry skin for a flawless, long-lasting winter tan.

If you have ever noticed a winter spray tan appearing patchy, fading prematurely, or emphasizing dry spots, you are not alone. While winter skin presents unique challenges for achieving a flawless glow, these obstacles are no reason to miss out on your seasonal tan.
At Mobile Beauty Co, we do hundreds of spray tans across Melbourne every winter, and dry skin is the number one thing that affects the result. The good news is it’s almost entirely preventable once you know what to do.
Here’s exactly what’s happening and how to fix it.
Why Winter Skin and Spray Tans Don’t Always Play Nice
In winter, your skin naturally produces less oil and loses moisture faster due to cold air, indoor heating and hot showers. The result is skin that’s drier, flakier and more uneven in texture than it is in summer.
Spray tan solution works by reacting with the top layer of your skin cells. When that top layer is dry, rough, or flaky, the solution clings to the driest patches most intensely, which is why your elbows, knees, ankles and shins often come out darker and patchy in winter while the rest of your body looks uneven.
The tan isn’t the problem. The skin underneath is.
The Signs Your Skin Isn’t Ready for a Spray Tan
Before your next appointment, check in with your skin. If you notice any of the following, your skin needs some preparation work first.
- Visible dry patches or flaking on your legs, arms or torso
- Rough, bumpy texture on your shins, elbows or knees
- Skin that feels tight after a shower
- Ashy or dull-looking skin tone
- Areas where previous tans have faded patchily or clung unevenly
- If you are a regular tanner and have recently had a spray tan or used self tanner
Any of these signals that your skin barrier is compromised and needs hydration before tanning.
How to Prep Dry Winter Skin for a Flawless Spray Tan
The good news is that with the right preparation, dry winter skin tans just as beautifully as summer skin. Here’s what actually makes a difference.
Exfoliate the Night Before (Not the Day Of)
Exfoliation removes the dry, dead skin cells sitting on the surface so the tan develops on fresh, even skin underneath. Use a non-oil-based exfoliating scrub or mitt the night before your appointment and pay extra attention to your knees, elbows, ankles, feet and shins.
Don’t exfoliate on the day of your appointment as this can leave the skin sensitive and reactive to the tan solution.
Moisturise Every Day in the Lead Up
In winter we recommend starting to moisturise daily at least three to five days before your appointment. Use a lightweight, non-oil-based moisturiser and apply it all over, especially to the areas that are most prone to dryness.
Stop moisturising on the morning of your appointment. Any moisturiser on the skin at the time of your tan will create a barrier between the solution and your skin, which affects development and can also cause patchiness.
Shave or Wax at Least 24 Hours Before
Freshly shaved or waxed skin has open pores that absorb tan solution too quickly and unevenly. Give your skin at least 24 hours to settle before your appointment. If you absolutely have to shave or wax on the day of your appointment, run cold water over the area to close the pores.
Skip the Long Hot Showers
We know this is the hardest one in winter. But long hot showers strip the skin of its natural moisture and leave it drier than before. Try turning the temperature down slightly and keeping showers shorter in the days leading up to your tan (as well as after!).
Be Product-Free for Your Appointment
On the day of your tan, have clean, dry skin and no moisturiser, fake tan, deodorant, perfume, or oil-based products anywhere on your body. These all create barriers that prevent the solution from developing evenly.
What Happens During Your Mobile Spray Tan in Winter
At Mobile Beauty Co, our therapists are trained to assess your skin on arrival and adjust the solution choice and application technique based on what your skin needs that day.
In winter we pay extra attention to dry-prone areas and take our time to ensure even coverage. We use professional-grade solutions that are specifically formulated to develop naturally on all skin types, including dry winter skin (our Moroccan Coco or Nights solutions are particularly popular in winter for their natural, non-orange finish on Melbourne’s cooler, paler complexions as well as being slightly less drying).
Our therapists bring everything to your door so you can stay warm and comfortable at home, which honestly makes winter tanning a complete non-issue.
We also recommend not having your heater on full blast during the appointment (as painful as that may be!). The hot air can cause the solution to drip and, surprisingly, the colder the air, the faster the spray tan will “dry” on your skin and feel less sticky.

How to Make Your Winter Tan Last Longer
Getting a great result is one thing. Keeping it is another. Here’s how to extend your tan through the winter weeks.
Moisturise every day after your first rinse. This is the single most important thing you can do. Dry skin causes tan to fade patchily. A lightweight, oil-free moisturiser applied daily will extend your result significantly.
Pat dry after showering, don’t rub. Rubbing removes the top layer of skin cells, which takes the tan with it.
Avoid long baths and heavy exfoliation. Both strip the tan faster. Stick to showers and save the exfoliating scrub for when you’re ready to prep for your next appointment.
Keep your skin hydrated from the inside. Drinking water in winter is often the first thing that drops off but hydrated skin from the inside holds a tan noticeably better.
Book your next tan every seven to ten days for continuous coverage through the winter months but only if you are following these rules and are able to keep up the moisturiser. Regular spray tans each week can have a compounding effect on the skin feeling dry so if you are able to stretch it to every two weeks this will give your skin a chance to fully bounce back in between.
Is a Spray Tan Worth It in Winter?
Absolutely. There’s a reason so many of our Melbourne clients book tans year-round. A spray tan in winter isn’t just about looking bronzed. It’s about how it makes you feel, confident, glowing and a little bit more like yourself again when everything outside is grey.
With the right preparation and aftercare, a winter spray tan lasts just as long as a summer one and looks just as good. The only difference is the prep and aftercare, and now you know exactly what to do.
